Cycle Friendly Scheme – what is it?

Highland Perthshire Cycling work closely with local businesses to promote cycle tourism in the area, and therefore to increase numbers of customers for local businesses, as well as encourage people to cycle to businesses locally. We run the ‘Cycle Friendly Scheme’ which comes in various categories:

food beds attractions shop

Here in beautiful Highland Perthshire, we want to ensure that if cyclists arrive wet and muddy, they can find somewhere safe to park their bike whilst enjoying the facilities provided by the business. So if it’s advertised to be CYCLE FRIENDLY it’s easy to spot and reassuring!

The CYCLE FRIENDLY SCHEME has evolved during this past year as we worked on our new MTB off road ROUTE CARDS and discussed cyclists’ needs WITH cyclists, looking for places en route to advertise where cyclists could get bike spares or food & drink, or where other members of a family group might visit - whilst the rest explored off the beaten track on bikes.

Cycle Friendly” - is a business that positively welcomes cyclists, usually has someone on the staff who can advise on cycling routes and needs, and has appropriate facilities ~ as defined by the criteria below, depending on the business – be it food, beds, shop or a local vistor attraction.

General “Cycle Friendly” criteria for all categories:

Welcome cyclists while on their ride or just after a ride. *

Have local cycle route information, Cycle Highland Perthshire Brochure
and Local Route cards & staff member who knows the area well *

There is a bike rack or other suitable and clearly demarcated area for cyclists to safely and securely park their bikes *

NB * indicates the facility is mandatory to comply with criteria. The use of the CYCLE designs are free of charge provided the business using and displaying the cycle design fulfils the appropriate criteria

There are also “Cycle Businesses” – which cater for cyclists as its prime function (or one of the prime functions), offering bikes for hire/sale, maintenance and bike spares, route maps and information - and some or all of the staff are dedicated cyclists. This is a standalone category used on our Route Cards – as it will be Cycle Friendly by its very nature!

Businesses which join the scheme, which is free, will be given advice as to what they could provide for cyclists. They will be listed on our website, sent quarterly e-newsletters with information on promoting cycling for businesses, and given a sticker to put in their window. We also hold regular meetings and information sessions and work with Cycling Scotland to promote the Cycle Friendly Employers scheme. www.cyclingscotland.org

We work closely with Explore Scotland who run the www.cyclehighlandperthshire.com website which supports local businesses promote themselves to cyclists.
